Dr. Gunne Bähr heads the German Insurance and Reinsurance Group of DLA Piper and is a partner of the Litigation and Regulatory Group in the Cologne office. He specialises in insurance and reinsurance law, insurance corporate and regulatory law. His clients comprise domestic and international insurance and reinsurance companies, brokers and industrial policyholders whom he assists in insurance and reinsurance matters as well as in lawsuits and arbitration procedures.

He also advises and represents insurers and reinsurers in complex liability and coverage proceedings, e.g. regarding D&O and other financial lines insurances such as E&O, PI and FI, but also with respect to product liability and other industrial insurances. He has handled widely noted D&O cases for insurers as monitoring and coverage counsel, but also represents insurers and reinsurers in court and arbitration proceedings. Besides that, Gunne Bähr has also represented reinsurers in arbitration proceedings concerning disputes about reinsurance issues and was involved in the settling of disputes between insurers and reinsurers.

Gunne Bähr has advised insurers, but also policyholders with respect to international insurance programmes and regarding a number of distribution cooperations in the insurance sector and with respect to group insurance structures and questions regarding internet distribution. A further focus of his work is on product development and policy wordings (industrial and consumer business) as well as mediation law.

Over the years, Gunne Bähr has developed particular expertise in insurance supervisory law and regarding the German Financial Services Supervisory Authority (“BaFin”). He advises insurers and reinsurers on insurance regulatory and corporate matters, inter alia, in M&A projects within the insurance sector, authorisation procedures, e.g. for the transfer of insurance and reinsurance portfolios, on risk management and run-off issues and on “fit and proper” approvals for managers. Furthermore, he advises on issues regarding business organisation and compliance, also with respect to the Solvency II Directive. Gunne Bähr has represented numerous (re)insurance companies and their officers and directors in insurance litigation and regula¬tory matters vis-à-vis the BaFin.
