We view the companies that we work with not only as clients for a discrete project but also as business partners with whom we seek to create value over both the short and long term. We focus on providing advice in the context of the insurance sector as a whole and clients’ existing circumstances and aspirations within the industry.
Our insurance and reinsurance practice is one of the largest and strongest, comprising over 300 lawyers serving the insurance industry globally. We offer a comprehensive range of specialist insurance services, including transactional, regulatory, commercial, coverage, dispute resolution and claims, competition, restructuring and emergency response.

We represent both start-ups and established multi-national life and non-life (re)insurers, Lloyd’s entities, intermediaries, banks, other financial institutions, capital providers (including hedge funds, private equity funds and venture capital funds), regulators and other insurance industry participants.

We understand the business of insurance as well as the legal issues that underpin the insurance sector. Many of our lawyers previously worked as business executives, in-house counsel, bankers and management consultants within the insurance industry. This combination of legal and industry experience enables us to implement practical and cost effective solutions for our clients. Our strong international network of lawyers provides swift access to knowledge and coordinated cooperation across practice areas and jurisdictions.

We regularly second lawyers to work directly for clients and we welcome the opportunity this gives our people to deepen their understanding of the industry. We believe in building a deep understanding of each client’s business to enable us to deliver the appropriate outcome, whether the matter relates to structuring, negotiating, and closing sophisticated transactions, litigating complex coverage and commercial disputes, or addressing regulatory compliance concerns.

DLA Piper became one of the largest business law firms in the world in 2005 through a merger of unprecedented scope in the legal sector. We were built to serve clients wherever in the world they do business – quickly, efficiently and with genuine knowledge of both local and international considerations. Whether our clients require seamless coordination across multiple jurisdictions or delivery in a single location, they can count on us to deliver the right service and solutions.

Our clients range from multinational, Global 1000, and Fortune 500 enterprises to emerging companies developing industry-leading technologies. They include more than half of the Fortune 250 and nearly half of the FTSE 350 or their subsidiaries. As we build our global presence, we remain committed to maintaining regional practices around the world where we do great work for longstanding clients. This gives us an understanding of middle market clients and insight into the issues facing both large clients and those seeking to establish a foothold.

Country managing partner Peter Shelford is widely identified as a leading figure in the Thai insurance market. He is best known for his handling of contentious matters related to all lines of insurance, and he also has significant transactional experience.
